Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem for the Jewish religious festival of the Passover was remembered on Palm Sundy. A few days later, on Maundy Thursday, Christians remember how Jesus shared one of the festival meals with his closest followers.
This meal is often referred to as The Last Supper. At the meal, Jesus took bread and broke it for his friends to share. ‘This is my body,’ he said, ‘broken for you.’ Then he took the cup of wine and passed it around. ‘This is my blood,’ he said, ‘shed for you.’
Matthew 26:26-28
While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to his disciples and said, “Take this and eat it. This is my body.” Then he took a cup. He gave thanks and handed it to them. He said, “All of you drink from it. This is my blood of the covenant. It is poured out to forgive the sins of many people.
Something to think about: I wonder what special food you eat at Easter time.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus to die on the cross for us. Please forgive me for the wrong things that I do. Help me to love other people like you love me. Amen.
Forgiveness of Sins
Jesus was telling his disciples on Maundy Thursday that he was going to die, and that they must share bread and wine to remember him. Christians celebrate this sharing of bread and wine all through the year as part of their worship service, and is often referred to as Holy Communion, but on Maundy Thursday it seems even more special. It is a special way that Christians receive God’s forgiveness – through the body (bread) and blood (wine) of Jesus. Here is an activity that demonstrates how much God loves you and forgives your sins.
