On Maundy Thursday Jesus was preparing for The Last Supper. Everyone had arrived – but who was going to be the servant and wash everyone’s dusty feet?
While Jesus’ friends were arguing, Jesus himself took the bowl and towel and washed their feet. He told his followers that they must be ready to show their love for one another in humble ways like this.
Bible Verse: John 13:12-17
After Jesus had washed the disciple’s feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, ‘Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
Something to think about: I wonder what you might think if Jesus came to your home to wash your feet.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Help us to remember to serve one another just as Jesus served us. Thank you for your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
Serving one another
Because Jesus washed his disciples’ feet, some Christians wash one another’s feet in church services on Maundy Thursday. It is a reminder to them to serve one another through the year, even if it means doing humble, boring jobs.
