Late on Maundy Thursday evening, after the Last Supper, Jesus knew it was nearly time to leave the world and go back to God, his Father. Jesus and his friends were all feeling sad, so they walk to their favourite place, an olive garden. Jesus asked them to stay up with him while he talked to his heavenly father.
Jesus knew it was time for him to die. They had planned it long ago, he and his Father. Jesus was going to take the punishment for all the wrong things anybody had ever done and would do.
Bible Verse: Mark: 14:32-36
They went to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray.’ He took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be distressed and agitated. And he said to them, ‘I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake.’ And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. He said, ‘Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want.’
Something to think about: I wonder how long you could stay awake to pray with Jesus before falling asleep.
Prayer: The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sing against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.
